Build an Engine Shed!
Every train needs a locomotive - and no matter what kind of locomotive is running on your railroad, it's going to need servicing and repairs at some point. That's why you need an Engine Shed for your LEGO Train layout! After all, without one, where will your trains go to get their repairs?
An Engine Shed is a large rectangular building, basically a big box perched over the railroad tracks with a train-sized door on either end. The train enters through one side, stops for repairs, and then departs through the other door when it's all fixed up.
Walls Building the walls for an Engine Shed is quite simple. Your walls should be two studs wide in order to provide stability and support for the structure. Make sure that you interlock the bricks on the corners - that way, the walls can help support each other. Don't forget the doors, or your train will have a hard time getting in and out of the shed! You can use arch pieces across the top to give them an elegant rounded effect.
Next, make the large windows. Take LEGO door frame pieces and stack two on top of each other and two next to each other. You can also add an arch piece here to produce the same rounded effect as on the doors. The Roof No building is complete without a roof (and it keeps the rain off your train!).
This Engine Shed is designed so that one side of the roof can be removed. This makes it possible for you to reach inside and "repair" your train, as well as to show off all the internal detailing. To build the roof, we begin by stacking two-stud-wide bricks to form a triangle on each end of the building. Then we stack bricks in the middle of the building to provide support, using 2x4 bricks offset by one stud until they come together at the top of the building.
For the permanently-attached side of the roof, we take two-stud-wide bricks and create supports for stability. Then we add black roof bricks for a nice, smooth roof line. On the removable side, we add smooth tiles to most of the supports so that the roof piece won't stick when we lift it off.
To create the removable section of roof itself, we stack the same amount of roof bricks as we used on the other side, then add two-wide bricks on the underside to support them.
