The ultimate development of the Northern type on the Union Pacific, the FEF-3 class is one of the finest examples of 4-8-4s to be found anywhere. These fast and powerful machines powered both heavy passenger and fast freights from 1944 until the end of regular steam operations. The class was so successful that Union Pacific chose No. 844 to carry on the tradition of steam in special service and has never retired the locomotive.
