Lionel Train Set Transformer - Power Your Model Train with Ease

Lionel still produces the train sets with a transformer.

The CW-80 Transformers will give you the ability to power accessories (lights, buildings, etc) along with the train without affecting the speed or operation of the train. The transformer sets are the best value in train sets, although we believe that Lionel may be going away from the transformer sets due to cost of the transformer. MTH Trains has already moved away from transformer sets in starter- ready -to-tun sets. The trend seems to be to replace the expensive transformer with a power pack/remote combo in the set. Transformers are still sold separately to allow for accessories.
